Entrepreneurship and Small Business

We noted earlier that Dell Computer started as a one person operation and grew into a giant corporation. Dell's growth was spurred by the imagination and skill of Michael Dell, the entrepreneur who founded the company.

Entrepreneurs are people who assume the risk of business ownership with a primary goal of growth and expansion. Many small business owners characterize themselves as entrepreneurs, but a lot of them don't really aspire to expand their businesses the way the true entrepreneurs does. Indeed, a person may be a small business owner only, an entrepreneur only, or both.

The key distinctions between small business ownership and entrepreneurship are vision, aspiration, and strategy. Whereas the small business owner has no plans for dramatic growth, seeking only a secure and comfortable income, the entrepreneurs is motivated to grow, expand, and build.
